Design Domain – Development of my Ideas for Proposal

Design Domain1, DesignDomain1, Year1

For the Design Domain Project – How Do We Live? – the sub-category that I was drawn to the most was; Why Do We Imagine? I was drawn to this as I felt there was so much potential behind the question, that I could draw many Ideas from.

Within the sub-category, I was thinking about how we create fiction, as a way of escapism from our lives and how that escapism had evolved into thinking of the future.

From the Symposium, the talks that I understood and connected with, the most were; Mariana Pestana’s – ‘Possible and Probable Futures: a critical approach to curating’ for Why do We Imagine? and Jen Sykes – ‘Places You’ve Never Been’ for Where Do We Live?. ‘How To Get Into Fashion’

I was inspired with Jen’s Talk due to her use of  machine learning to be utilised to something as personal as her Grandparent’s photos. As well as . I was also intrigued by Eunice’s Talk as she about how the development of both fashion and technology together has made our culture focus on our looks more than ever and how she hopes that we can overcome this and make more sustainable fashion

I originally was thinking about various things such as; Fictional Languages – used in Film and Pop culture, and how that may interact with real languages as well as digital languages such as coding. As well as how our emotions work and how we convey that through communication in digital form. I also watched the Ted Talk; The Future of Lying by Jeff Hancock, where he discussed how often one lies and how technology is used in relation. Due to his studies on the subject he found that, email is the most honest form of communication, and that you are more likely to be lied to in person than through other forms of communication.

I was also thinking about how 100 years ago, in the 1910s, there was not as much forms of communication. They had the Telegraph, Telephone and Letters, whereas now we have the internet, email etc.

I realised that escapism has become part of our culture, yet those in 1910s could not indulge as they had to face the reality of the World War 1.

I decided that I wanted to focus on the both the 1910s and 2010s and perhaps create a comparison between them.

I decided to create thumbnails to represent the layout of each
